McLaren Formula One Designer Unveils New Minicar, Smaller (And Cooler) Than Smart Car

The T.25 Minicar, unveiled Monday, is a new generation of city car designed by a Formula One engineer. Gordon Murray DesignRide in the center like Mario Andretti

A new tiny car designed by a Formula One engineer tops out at 80 mph, but it can ride two to a lane, suggesting a new way to reduce congestion on city streets.

The T.25, designed by McLaren F1 maker Gordon Murray, runs on regular gasoline and will cost about $9,000, CNN-UK reports. Its fuel efficiency is about 74 miles per gallon, partly because it's a lightweight 1,200 pounds.

It has an electric cousin called the T.27, which will reach about 80-100 miles per gallon and cost $18,000.

Like its iconic F1 racer forebears, the T.25 has a central driving position, allowing motorists to feel like they're in a miniaturized Gran Prix.

Murray's design team had been secretive about the T.25's details until Monday, when the car made its first public appearance. It showed up at the Smith School's World Forum on Enterprise and the Environment in Oxford.

It's smaller than the Smart car, at less than 8 feet long and about 4 feet wide. That narrow size would make it possible for two cars to ride in a UK highway lane, and for three cars to fit in a typical parallel parking space, Murray's Web site says.

The car's manufacturing process is also unique -- Murray claims his "iStream" process will revolutionize the assembly line. It allows all major components to be fitted directly on to the chassis prior to the body panels, which are pre-painted and recyclable.

The car has a modular interior that allows for six different configurations, which can be easily changed to fit passengers or cargo. Murray's team is planning T.25 versions of a van, pickup truck, taxi, police car, convertible and even a minivan, according to Green Car Reports.

Human-Sized Hamster Ball Lets You Play in Virtual Worlds

Jump into the next generation of arcade gaming in the Virtusphere

Get ready to lose yourself in videogames-literally. In May, the Excalibur Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas installed the first public Virtusphere, a human-sized hamster ball that lets you move through virtual worlds by walking, running, or crawling inside it. Until now, the sphere has been used primarily for military and police training.

Now, wearing a virtual-reality visor, anyone inside can play a first-person-shooter game or tour historic Russian architecture.

The 10-foot sphere is made of the same plastic as Legos, and its curvature helps to cushion players if they fall. The ball spins on a platform fitted with 45 caster-mounted wheels. Beneath, an optical sensor tracks motion the same way a computer mouse does, watching for relative movement across x and y axes. To make the experience truly immersive, the player is fitted with a head-mounted display with two internal LCD screens. A laptop wirelessly collects the data from the sensor and the gyroscopes, magnetometers and accelerometers on the headset to create the image the player sees.

As new spheres pop up in malls and arcades, users will be able to jump into movie trailers or globe-trot using Google Earth.

LHC Scientists Simulate the Sound of the 'God Particle'

If a theoretical force-carrying, subatomic particle were to materialize in the universe and no one were around to hear it, would it make a sound? Existential aspects aside, physicists at the Large Hadron Collider believe that the elusive Higgs boson, should it prove to be real, will most definitely make a sound, and they plan to be around to hear it. In fact, that's one of the ways they plan to detect the so-called "god particle," and they've simulated the sounds a Higgs boson might make so they can listen for its arrival.

The sound won't actually come from the particles themselves, but from the ATLAS experiment, one of the four huge sensors placed within the 17-mile particle collider. One of ATLAS's sensors, the calorimeter, measures energy from proton collisions is made of seven concentric layers. Each layer represents a different note, and their pitches can change based on the amount of energy produced by a particle collision.

From that, researchers at the LHC have simulated what the emergence of a Higgs boson might sound like if and when it occurs within ATLAS based on what they think the energy of a particle's emergence would produce. The sounds are actually very musical and quite beautiful, if a bit eerie (akin to listening to an Aphex Twin record). Researchers will use the sound signatures as an analytical tool to help them identify new particles if they do indeed emerge from the particle collisions.

First Ever Torrent Exclusive Series Released

Torrents have been getting a bad rap lately, but pressure has been increasing lately as more and more studios are cracking down on piracy. They must know that you cannot kill a system like that (even by suing those who downloaded The Hurt Locker), it’s just too large and spread out. Somebody seems to get this, as we are now seeing the first series ever to be released exclusively for free download via torrents.

The show, Pioneer One, is a science fiction story about an object falling from space only to release radiation which spreads all over North America. US Homeland Security, suspecting terrorism , sends agents to investigate and contain the damage. What they discover will have implications for the entire world. Sounds pretty badass to me, especially after Splice left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

One issue with torrents though is that torrents don’t cost anything to use and therefore the studio has to look for less conventional ways of making the money to fund these episodes. This is where we come in, as the show is completely funded by donations and the studio is banking on us liking the show enough to put some money down to see it through. The first episode (pilot) was shot for just $6000 and they are looking for at least $20,000 for the filming of the next three episodes.

While I can’t comment on the quality of the show as I have not yet seen it, it is in my downloads queue and of course, if it is good I will definitely donate to see it through to the end.

If you are interested, you can download it in HD or Xvid HERE
